The Art of Trust: How Business Managers Become Anchors in the Entertainment Industry
By Michelle Stone
A business manager’s role is deeply personal work that relies on trust, clear communication, and steady guidance, and Ashley Greene, a Director of Business Management at Adeptus highlights the importance of building lasting client relationships by being consistent and objective.
Ashley spends her days immersed in her clients’ most private and complicated matters. As a Business Manager, also known as a “financial concierge,” Ashley and her team are responsible for paying bills, tracking income, overseeing tax planning, and keeping contracts and compliance in order. It is a mix of accounting, coordination, and making sure problems are addressed before they become urgent.
Her clients are often actors, performers, and creatives whose lives leave little time for managing finances. In Ashley’s view, the best business managers allow clients to stay focused on their work while knowing that someone is keeping watch over the details.
A Relationship Built on Access and Trust
Unlike a traditional accountant, a business manager works alongside a client’s full circle of attorneys, agents, and personal managers to make sure nothing falls through the cracks. The role involves a high level of visibility into a client’s life, which makes trust the foundation of the work.
Most of Ashley’s clients come through referrals, which helps establish an initial level of comfort. From there, trust grows through clear communication and decisions that consistently serve the client’s interests.
“Sometimes clients come in with their guard up,” Ashley says. “My job is to be transparent about my values and always act in their best interest, even if that means having hard conversations.” She believes maintaining a steady, objective perspective is essential, especially in an industry where it can be easy to get caught up in personalities.
The Impact That Follows
When Ashley joined Adeptus, several of her clients from a previous firm made the move with her, even though switching can be disruptive. For her, it was a sign that the relationships she had built mattered.
“You’re there to do the best you can at your job,” she says. “That experience made me realize I was making an impact and inspired me to continue. It was a turning point where I knew this was for me.”
In a business where circumstances can change quickly, Ashley’s aim is to be a calm, consistent presence who helps her clients move forward with confidence.
