October 15 Tax Deadline: What Individuals and Business Owners Need to Know

By Michelle Stone

As the year moves into its final stretch, another key tax deadline is on the horizon. October 15 marks the extended filing deadline for individual tax returns and for calendar-year C corporations that requested additional time to file earlier in the year.

For many taxpayers, this date represents the final opportunity to submit a complete and accurate return for the 2025 tax year before facing potential late-filing penalties.

Extended Individual Tax Returns Are Due

Individuals who filed for a six-month extension using Form 4868 must generally submit their completed Form 1040 by October 15.

October 15 is the point at which that grace period for filing comes to a close. Taxpayers who miss this deadline without a valid reason may face a failure-to-file penalty.

October 15 is also a filing deadline for many businesses.

Calendar-year C corporations that received a six-month extension generally must file Form 1120 by this date.

As with individual returns, an extension for a corporate return provides additional time to file but does not extend the time to pay any tax that was originally due. Businesses approaching this deadline should confirm that their financial records, supporting schedules, and any required elections are finalized and ready for submission.

Other Considerations Around This Deadline

October 15 can also carry significance for other filing obligations, including the extended deadline for the Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR) for taxpayers who did not file by the earlier deadline. Taxpayers with foreign accounts, retirement plan contributions tied to their extended return, or other time-sensitive elections should confirm whether any related deadlines also fall on or around this date.

Why This Deadline Matters

Missing the October 15 deadline can result in additional penalties and interest, and in some cases can limit certain elections or opportunities that are tied to timely filing. For taxpayers who have been waiting on documentation, finalizing records, or resolving outstanding questions, this deadline is the last checkpoint before those issues become more costly to address.

Use October as a Chance to Finish Strong

With the extended filing season coming to a close, October is a good time to make sure nothing has been overlooked. Reviewing your return for accuracy, confirming that all income and deductions are properly reported, and ensuring any balance due has been addressed can help avoid unnecessary penalties.

Looking ahead, this is also a natural point to begin thinking about year-end tax planning for 2026, since only a few months remain to make decisions that could affect this year’s tax outcome.
